Research: Themes

Man vs Himself:
Roy
  • Internal struggle/battle (Depression, suicidal, drug problems)
  • He is is own worst enemy (His actions don't help his situation)
  • Has other obstacles that escalate his depression and suicidal tendencies (Ex partner being with another man that he hates and is jealous of)
  • As a result he uses and hurts other people (Uses his story telling to persuade Alexandria to steal Morphine for him. The last time she did it for him she fell off the bench and broke her leg)
Loss of Innocence:
Alexandria

  • Naive (Views Roy as a friend and story teller, he abuses her trust by persuading her to steal drugs)
  • Loss of trust (Alexandria loses trust in Roy for a while when he is killing off all the characters in his story)
  • She is introduced to the complexity of the adult world (Roy was persuading her to steal drugs for him when she knew stealing was wrong. It is more complex than she understands as she was stealing life threatening drugs that he was abusing)
Overcoming Adversity:
Roy and Alexandria:
  • Alexandria fights Roy against his story telling as he starts killing off all the characters and is about to give up on his (Black Bandit). Alexandria is too late to save the other characters and focuses on the Black Bandit (this is also a metaphor on saving him in real life). They are both upset while narrating the story together. She grows stronger and persuades Roy not to let his story end with him not fighting for himself.

Artist Model: James Jean

James Jean is my favourite artist. He has a lot of different yet similar styles of works so I'll have to narrow down what style I want to achieve for my poster. Because I am very new to digital painting I don't want to overwhelm myself with his more realistic artwork. Instead I will focus on his more "flat", detailed works.

I think James Jean would suit my chosen movie as the movie is very bright, strange and surreal in parts.

Class Exercises: Character Portraits

I have never digitally painted before so I'm terrified of this paper. Here are my first ever portraits. I feel I improved pretty quickly though.

My chosen film is The Fall.
